When it comes to decluttering our stuff, letting go of expensive things is no different than letting go of cheaper things, well at least it should be. But for some unknown reason, we find it much harder to let go of an expensive thing than a cheap thing, even when it doesn't bring us any joy whatsoever. The amount spent on something isn’t a measure of how useful it is. It isn’t a measure of how much we like the possession.

It should not matter if an item costs 10€ or 100€ if it does not bring you any joy or isn't of any use to you, get rid of it. Value has nothing to do with cost. Value is a personal thing. You can value more an item that was free, than an item that was super expensive. The item has the value you give to it, not the value of the price tag.

When getting rid of these items, you need to erase from your mind the cons of it. Just ask yourself it that item is something that you want/need to keep in your life. If it is, go ahead and keep it, if not, them you can look at the price tag of it and decide what to do with it. Here are some guidelines on how you can get rid of your expensive pieces:

SELL THEM // when you have an expensive item, it can easily become extremely desirable to others, so find a good price for that item and sell it online.

GIFT THEM // see if you can gift the item so someone you know will want it or need it. Although it's not a brand new gift, the person you will gift it too will still love it.

DONATE THEM // even though they are expensive items, you can still donate them to people that need them most. In the end, it's only cluttering your life anyway. It's time to part with it.

  1. This is so true.
I'm always falling for the mistake of keeping everything that I spent a lot of money on, and every time I look at that piece I feel guilty for not wearing it and for not wanting to get rid of it.
Now I must try and use your advice, maybe I can get rid of some things :)

    1. Hi Emma =)
It's much easier if we don't look at the price tag when deciding what to keep.
Try it and let me know hot it went =)

  2. Sometimes, I question if I like a product because it's genuinely good or just luxury. I make impulse purchases a lot and end up returning them. Once they're gone, I realize I don't miss them. There is really something to be said for decluttering because once we let go, we realize we didn't need extraneous possessions in the first place.

  3. This is so true. I have a hard time letting go of more expensive items, because if I donate them I feel like I've wasted a lot of money! So I try to sell them, which does make me feel better about letting go. You know, the funny thing is in the past year I've sold and donated so many clothes, and I can honestly say I don't miss any of them. I still need to let go of more but it's really hard now!
