If you travel to the wonders of google you will find that Minimalism is kinda like a trend. Looking at the amazing style of Love Aesthetics or Restless Bones, you can probably figure out what the Minimalistic trend is all about, but that is not the kind of Minimalism that I'm applying to my way of dressing or my way of life. It's not about the clean cuts and the simple colors or the use of less jewelry like neck cuffs (that I adore). Having a Minimalist Closet is about only having the essential things for every day, owning the right amount of shoes and the right amount of pants or jackets. Is about creating different outfits with just a few pieces, having the basics and be able to transform them. At least, that is what Minimalism is for me.

“Minimalism is not a style, it is an attitude, a way of being. It’s a fundamental reaction against noise, visual noise, disorder, vulgarity. Minimalism is the pursuit of the essence of things, not the appearance.”
(Massimo Vingelli)

This quote represents everything that I think Minimalism is. One cannot claim to be a Minimalist if one owns 30 pairs of pants or 20 bags. For me being a minimalist is having the bare essentials, 3 pairs of pants, 5 jackets, 3 bags, but all this depends on everyone's lifestyle, if my lifestyle obligate me to have 7 pairs of shoes (one for every day of the week) that would not be considered having too many shoes. But when not talking about the "obligations" one can perfectly live with only 50 items of clothing, if not less. Establishing your own essentials is my number one rule, this way you will know exactly what you need, and you will probably be able to invest in a certain item if you know that it will last for years.

You can apply Minimalism into your daily life as well, but I'm not getting into that, at least not for now, that is a whole other stage. Some good reasons to have a minimalist closet are:

  • You will always know what to wear because the choices in your closet are less.
  • When traveling this also applies, it's easier to pack when you have fewer things to take with you, they will be mostly basics mixed and matched with key pieces.
  • You will stop consumerism (it will be hard, but in time you will only go shopping for necessities).
  • You will have more quality pieces in your wardrobe, by investing in key pieces.
  • You will feel more free, with consumerism out of the table, you will have more time to enjoy life.

So this is my point of view on Minimalism, it's not a trend but a way of life, a pursuit for the essence of things as Massimo Vingelli says. I already made a list with my top ten items that I think as timeless, and also check my Wardrobe Planning posts, I will continue this posts on wardrobe planning very soon.

  1. I love the Minimalist theology but I'm trying hard not to get swept away with the whole French look that goes with it which includes certain brands (Isabel Marant, APC) and pieces of clothing (round neck sweater, breton stripe top). I think it's good to adopt the concept into your existing closet without losing your own personality in it.
